Presentation

On July 9 1980 at the restaurant “Crocodile” in Strasbourg, Altiero Spinelli (1907-1986) met eight MEPs who had welcomed his appeal: “the Community must reform or perish”.

Thus was born the “Crocodile Club”, whose action, carried out in particular through the “Letter to the Members of European Parliament”, in the early 1980s, led to the approval in 1984 by the European  Parliament of the draft Treaty on the European Union, which has had a great influence on the developments of the European integration process.

We propose here the full version of the “Letter” which took its name from the Club, from the first issues (1980-1983), to those ones of the period 1991-1995.
